Practice Tips

Do not start off with a timer clicking down how much time they have to
practice.  This makes practicing a chore, which exactly opposite of its
purpose.  The student needs to enjoy their time with their instrument, and
if it is being forced upon them, they will assume that it must not in fact be
an enjoyable time, whether or not it started as one.

Accomplish one goal at a time.  I write down what they should
accomplish on each song.  This should be their goal as opposed to an
amount of time.  You can help by reading goals for each song and
encouraging them along the way to reaching that goal.  The goal might
be things like “get RH (right hand) down,” “HT (hands together),” “smooth
it out,” “rhythm”

Do not play too fast.    One of the biggest errors which students make
is to play a piece too quickly before they are ready.  I try to explain how
important it is to create a firm foundation to better build upon.  You can
help by reminding them that if they can play it slow and controlled they
will be able to speed it up much more easily.

Establish a daily routine.   Ideally a student practices daily, (or close to
it) this seems to be easiest when the time has already been carved out
for it.  Try not to pick a time right before a playdate or favorite tv show
that might have them distracted.  Better times might be right before
dinner or in the morning.
